Tachisme / Informel
Tachisme, the language of gesture and the unconscious derived from the French term tache - meaning “stain” or “blot". Tachisme (also known as Art Informel) emerged in France during the 1940s and 1950s as a defining movement in postwar European abstraction. Often regarded as the European counterpart to American Abstract Expressionism, Tachisme similarly values spontaneity, gestural mark-making, and freedom from rigid compositional structures. Yet, while Abstract Expressionism is often monumental and raw, Tachisme tends toward a more intuitive, lyrical, and introspective mode of expression. Philosophical and psychological discourses highlight why this matters. Modern thought emphasizes the power of non-conscious processes in shaping human creativity. Our emotions, perceptions, and decisions are not only the product of conscious thought but are profoundly influenced by the subconscious. Building on this, Carl Gustav Jung introduced the idea of the collective unconscious: a shared reservoir of archetypes and symbols found across cultures and epochs. Within this framework, art can be seen not merely as personal expression but as a manifestation of a deeper, universal source of meaning. Through its gestural abstraction and resistance to rational form, Tachisme engages directly with this unconscious domain - offering a visual language that precedes, and even transcends, conscious cognition. This online presentation offers a selected portfolio of works by Attila Konnyu.
