After six months of being pregnant with Attila, his mother was diagnosed with a critical health condition and taken to the Hospital and Maternity Care Centre. According to the examining doctors, the mother’s condition would have fatal consequences at childbirth; either she, or the baby, or both of them would die at birth. The doctors wanted to convince his parents to terminate her pregnancy.

However, on the night before the termination, his mother had a spiritual experience of such intensity that she refused to give her consent. In spite of all the odds, with both parent’s determination Attila Konnyu was born in the midst of a huge hailstorm on a warm summer night. He was a very protected child due to the circumstances of his birth, which left a deep impression on his parents.

His father’s career as a soldier was interrupted at the end of World War II when, in January 1945, he was captured by the Soviets Army but he finally returned home in December 1949. Not even the brutal prisoner camps could not take his spirit away. The young Attila was very deeply affected by the fate and suffering of his father.

The Late 1990’s and Early 2000’s:

Konnyu’s near-death experiences as a seven year-old child and as a young adult guided him towards meditation. This interest, at first self-taught, was later helped by spiritual guides and mentors as well as studying literature. His experiences during meditation guided him towards Expressionism. This fascination with the art of Abstract Expressionists brought him to the Miklos Grandpierre Kolozsvari School of Art. Upon his meeting with the Tachisme artists whom he held in high regard, Konnyu departed on his journey of new gestural painting with a sometimes calligraphic aspect as a way of his self-expression. He met with the two genius abstract expressionist artists, Karel Appel and Emil Schumacher, in Tuscany and on the island of Ibiza.

“Create your paintings with strong, wild gestures and do it with a pure heart! If you please, shout with the power of wild colors, but create your paintings with the honesty of the sleeping child in you!” These were the words of Karel Appel to Konnyu when they saw each other at the end of 1990's in Europe.

Konnyu began to depict that visual world of his experiences during meditation, the series of continuously pulsating, vibrating, feeling and loving ‘unknown’ spiritual states. He uses colors as a kind of emotional energy state, (blood red, sky blue, yellow orange, gold and silver and the power of nature, the poison green). He presented his expressionist paintings at various events and galleries in California, Monaco, Spain, Switzerland and Hungary.

Konnyu has traveled all over the world.
He visited the continent of Australia and many countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North and South America and the Pacific Islands.
He lived in the magnificent Mediterranean countries, (Italy and Spain) for three years.

The 2010’s:

Consolidation and Evolution

In 2013 Konnyu moved to the city of Palm Beach, Florida in the United States. Inspired by Florida nature, he began creating a new series of paintings in his art studio.

Konnyu started making his sculptures in the early 2010's. His most important drive was his own paintings. He felt that the gestures, created in the two dimensional paintings could be displayed in three dimensions.

He is taking the abstract shapes further, his gestural abstractions where the material is being shaped by his hand, by modeling, working out the shapes in clay, at times even he leaves his fingerprints behind. This process gives his works an organic feeling. These abstract shapes may reference human or animal figures. Konnyu distorts and breaks up the form, sometimes he leaves it behind altogether. The undulating form cast in bronze interprets the appearing thing in its essence.

His artworks have been exhibited in US at prestigious venues, galleries and Art Fairs at Miami Art Basel Weeks and Art Palm Beach.

Artist’s Creed and Thoughts

When I was a child, I spent every summer vacation in a village in the countryside. I’ve learned to love animals and nature itself with the fervency of a small child. I’ve seen the animals being born. I remember how deeply it touched me when a moment after the little calf was born, it looked at me. I was impressed by the wonderful flowers in the fields and the vivid colors of nature after the rain.

Perhaps, as a gift to my unclouded admiration, on a wonderful summer day, in a field full of red poppies, suddenly I saw a fantastic rainbow, that seemed so close, that I felt I could almost touch it. I still remember this strong desire to touch this wonderful gate and go through to this unknown and fascinating world. The scenery and this unforgettable intensity affected me as if God was there with me. This experience has been with me my whole life.

Imagine substances that transform, flow, trickle, abiding by the rules of Physics and Chemistry, fusing, merging and dividing. Imagine colors that serve as emotional energies, interacting in constant, varied motion. This is a curious mystery, an intimate state bringing harmony, a path to the Ancient Source of Life, which is a common desire of mankind. My works are manifestations of emotional energy, the visual depictions of eternal feelings and emotions, those elemental cosmic energies, emotional mirrors of the soul, manifestations of the Spirit.
